Hydroponic spinach: EC, pH, and temperature guide

Spinach is a cool-season hydroponic crop that bolts in heat. Get the EC, pH, and especially the temperature right and it stays leafy and productive.

Hydroponic spinach targets

VariableTargetNotes
EC1.8-2.3 mS/cmStronger than lettuce or basil
pH6.0-7.0Tolerates a higher pH
Water tempBelow ~70°F (21°C)The key to stopping bolting
Light10-14 h/dayAvoid excessive heat from fixtures

Spinach is a productive hydroponic green, but it is fussier about temperature than lettuce or basil. As a quick answer: keep EC around 1.8 to 2.3 mS/cm, pH 6.0 to 7.0, and the water below about 70°F (21°C) so it does not bolt. If reservoir chemistry is still new to you, start with hydroponic nutrient basics.

EC and pH for hydroponic spinach

Spinach likes a stronger, slightly more alkaline solution than most leafy greens. Target an EC of 1.8 to 2.3 mS/cm and a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. That is noticeably higher than the 0.8 to 1.2 EC that suits lettuce, so do not simply reuse a lettuce reservoir; the full comparison is in the hydroponic EC chart by crop.

Temperature is the real challenge

The biggest difference with spinach is heat sensitivity. It is a cool-season crop that bolts, sending up a flower stalk and turning bitter, when it gets too warm. Keep the water below about 70°F (21°C) and the air cool, and choose slow-bolt varieties for indoor growing. Managing temperature matters more here than fine-tuning nutrients; the same reservoir-temperature principles as lettuce apply, covered in hydroponic water temperature.

Germination and light

Spinach germinates best in cool conditions, so start seeds somewhere cool rather than on a warm mat. Once growing, 10 to 14 hours of light is plenty; avoid fixtures that pump heat into a small space, since that works against the cool conditions spinach wants.

Common problems

  • Bolting: too warm; lower temperature and use slow-bolt varieties.
  • Slow or patchy germination: seeds started too warm; germinate cool.
  • Pale or weak growth: check EC is in the higher 1.8 to 2.3 range spinach prefers.
FAQ

Common questions

What EC and pH does hydroponic spinach need?

Aim for an EC of about 1.8 to 2.3 mS/cm and a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Spinach prefers a stronger solution and a slightly higher pH than lettuce or basil.

What water temperature does hydroponic spinach need?

Keep the water cool, ideally below about 70°F (21°C). Spinach is a cool-season crop, and warm water plus warm air make it bolt and turn bitter quickly.

Why is my hydroponic spinach bolting?

Usually heat and long, intense light. Spinach bolts (sends up a flower stalk) when it is too warm. Lower the temperature, and choose slow-bolt varieties for indoor growing.

Is spinach harder to grow hydroponically than lettuce?

A little, mainly because of germination and temperature. Spinach germinates best cool and bolts in heat, so it is less forgiving than lettuce, but the chemistry is straightforward.
